![]() Diablo winds, a dry current that flows from the east or northeast and down into the San Francisco Bay area, is often linked as a contributing factor that helps prolong the fire season.ĭuring spring and fall seasons, Diablo winds reach the San Francisco Bay Area and down the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range into the Great Central Valley from the northern coast ranges. Regional winds and currents play a significant role too. However, dry vegetation is not the sole reason behind California wildfires. About 65% of California’s vegetation was drier in the first half of June 2021 than it did during the same period a year ago, creating the perfect condition for wildfires to thrive. The smallest decline in vegetation dryness can increase wildfire hazard significantly. During these conditions, dry vegetation becomes the perfect fuel for wildfires and when lightning strikes, it ignites a fire that can spread rapidly with the aid of strong winds and elevated temperatures. ![]() Natural wildfires, which are classified as natural disasters by the Environmental Protection Agency, can start during low precipitation, dry weather and droughts. This could take the form of lightning strikes or human sources such as campfires or cigarettes. Heat sources : to ignite and burn the fuel.Fuel : Any flammable material surrounding a fire, which can come in the form of live or dead trees, dry vegetation and other organic matter.Wildfires can occur naturally and as a result of human activity, but three elements must be present for a wildfire to start: Most importantly, all teachers teaching the course must adhere, at a minimum, to the COR, regardless of location or modality of instruction.BECOME AN EO MEMBER TODAY What Causes California Wildfires The ASCCC paper, The Course Outline of Record: A Curriculum Reference Guide Revisited, published in 2017, provides basic information about what must be included in the COR along with tips for writing an effective outline. Faculty will want to review CORs with great care and critical analysis before asking the curriculum committee to approve a new or modified course. This document is the single most important piece of information for establishing prerequisites or corequisites via content review. The COR provides the roadmap for any instructor assigned to teach the course which makes it the key document for articulating courses and assuring university partners that students have been evaluated on the identified content of the course. If the course can be taught in a shortened time frame, such as a 3-, 4-, 6- or 8-week session, then the appropriate shortened term lengths may be noted on the COR. In order to ensure that a qualified instructor is teaching the course, each course must be assigned one or more disciplines from the Disciplines List, and the course maximum per class section should also be recorded on the COR or an addendum to the COR (although local bargaining processes may dictate slightly different procedures). It establishes the number of units for the course plus the number of hours of instruction and will list any prerequisite(s) or corequisite(s) required for the course. The official Course Outline of Record (COR) defines the content, objectives, methods of instruction and evaluation, sample textbooks and instructional materials for the course, and more.
